Suzuki Motor Corporation has unveiled new versions of its Swift with a hybrid drive system in Japan. The new Swift Hybrid comes in two variants, the Swift Hybrid SG and the Swift Hybrid SL.

The new model comes with a 91 PS 1.2-litre petrol motor to a 10 kW electric Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and a 5-speed AMT transmission. The system comes with the ability to automatically stop the engine and switch to EV driving when it detects that the vehicle is coasting with a relatively lower load and in heavy traffic conditions.

According to a report by Overdrive, Suzuki claims that the Swift Hybrid delivers 32 kilometres per litre of mileage in the Japanese variant. This can also attributed to its weight at 1,000 kgs, one that lets the new Swift fall in a vehicle segment which qualifies for tax breaks in Japan.

Suzuki has previously showcased Swift hybrids in the past, but this is the first time that the company unveiled two full-blown hybrids, unlike the milder Smart Hybrid Vehicular System (SVHS) – equipped ones that have made their way to India.

The Hybrid SL variant comes equipped with a paddle shift gear system along with other standard equipment including advanced safety features like a Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) collision-mitigating system that uses a monocular camera coupled with a laser sensor to detect pedestrians and vehicles ahead. The SL also packs in SRS curtain airbags and front seat SRS side airbags.
