The HP Z2 Mini Workstation packs great performance into a tiny package, but at a cost
HP has announced the Z2 Mini workstation in India at a starting price of Rs 72,000. It will go on sale on 25 January.
The workstation is being marked as the first “mini workstation designed for CAD users”.
Regardless of your inclination to using CAD, the workstation is quite powerful. You get a choice of CPUs, ranging from an Intel i3 6100 to an i7 6700 and Xeon E3-1245 v5. You get 32GB of RAM at 2133MHz, a 500GB or 1TB HDD or, for performance, various configurations of 256GB PCIe-based SSD modules. For graphics, you can either stick with Intel’s integrated graphics option (HD Graphics 530 or HD Graphics PS30) or you can opt for a discrete chip in the form of the Nvidia Quadro M620.
You get one spare M.2 slot, 2 USB 3.0 ports on the side, and on the back, two USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C ports. Depending on your configuration, you’ll get either a 135W or 200W power supply unit.
The dimensions and weight of this workstation is what makes it special. The base model tips the scale at a mere 2.04 kg, which is less than that of many workstation laptops. It’s also small enough (2.3 inches tall) to be mounted behind your monitor via a VESA bracket.
The workstation will come pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro or Linux.
HP claims that the workstation starts at Rs 72,000 and if the base model does indeed come with an Intel i3 6100 CPU, the price is on the higher side.
