Instagram, the image sharing social media platform, has reached 700 million users. The Facebook-owned company announced the milestone yesterday in a blog post detailing that the last 100 million users arrived “faster than ever”.
Instagram recapped all its new features including Instagram stories, live video, geo stickers, disappearing messages using ‘Instagram Direct’, carousel posts and ‘Collections’ that it has introduced to improve the user experience and engagement.
The company thanked its users for their support in the blog post. One thing to note here is that even though Instagram is nowhere near the 1.8 billion users that Facebook commands, the number of users is still significant in the social media space.
It’s ironic that the rate at which people were signing up for Instagram only shot up after the company started copying features from Snapchat, as GSMArena reports. The blatant copying seems to have paid off for the company as it has added 100 million users in four months in comparison to the rise from 500 million to 600 million, which took five months in 2016.
This comes just weeks after the company announced that about 200 million users on Instagram are using ‘Instagram Stories’, which is more than the the 161 million users that use Snapchat. To put the growth in perspective, the number of users Instagram added in four months is more than half the total user base of Snapchat.
Facebook seems to have unlocked the key to ‘Social’ aspect of different social media platforms. If you just look at Facebook’s portfolio, few offerings have fewer than a billion users each.
