Xiaomi recently launched the Mi 5C in China which is the company’s first phone with its in-house chipset. The smartphone is powered by the Surge S1 SoC, which is a mid-range processor. Xiaomi is also said to be working on another mobile processor which will be called Surge S2 and will be used for high-end smartphones.
The company was rumoured earlier to have a high-end version of the Pinecone processor which would be manufactured using a 10nm manufacturing process. But it seems that this is not going to be the case. The new SoC will be called Surge S2 and while it will be a high-end chip, it would use a 16nm TSMC manufacturing process along with the same octa-core architecture as the Surge S1. If you remember, the Surge S1 features eight ARM Cortex A53 cores built on the 28nm process including four cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the remaining four at 1.4GHz.
The Surge S2 is said to be already under testing and will be mass produced by the third quarter of this year. This means that we could see a new Xiaomi handset in the fourth quarter featuring the new the Surge S2 chip. It seems that the decision of choosing the 16nm process was to cut down costs. However, producing a 10nm chip compared to 16nm would definitely cost higher since it requires cramming the cores on a smaller wafer.
